“What do you mean?”
He looked genuinely confused. The mug of coffee turning slowly in his hands. Dark eyes were lowered as he stared down at the beverage. Not really seeing it. Not really seeing anything. Jim was trying not to think about anything right now. Struggling not to think of all those people.
“What do you want in return for this?”
She stopped there, and toyed with the coffee for a few seconds, stirring it with the plastic end of her lollipop before lifting it out and holding it between her teeth in consideration.
“What is it you want to know?” she added curiously, wiping the stick across her lip and dropping it to the table. “I’m finding all this sudden generosity pretty weird.”

Hey, I don’t think I know you, actually, yeah, I don’t, what’s your name?
“Jasper Holmes. And you are?”

Hey, I don’t think I know you, actually, yeah, I don’t, what’s your name?
It’s a pretty common name, but thanks I guess. How’s it going then?
Is it? Oh. I’m kinda new, around here, guess I just haven’t met enough people for it to be common yet.

Oh. Huh. I’m… pretty good, actually, thanks for asking. Kinda lost, but uh, pretty good, aside from not knowing where the fuck I am. You?
Siri- no, you’re not, are you? You’re not. Uh, I, sorry, thought you were, someone else. Uh, what’s your name, since you’re not who I thought, if you don’t mind telling?
Gabriel. Gabriel Grey.
That… That’s, uh, I don’t think I know any other Gabriels, I mean I don’t know many people, but that’s a really cool name, congratulations, I think.

I’m- My name’s Call, by the way. Annalee Call. But uh, no one ever uses Annalee, really? But you can use whichever you want, I guess.
Siri- no, you’re not, are you? You’re not. Uh, I, sorry, thought you were, someone else. Uh, what’s your name, since you’re not who I thought, if you don’t mind telling?

“An alternative? I….”
Jim looked lost for a moment and he clasped his hands as if in prayer. He licked his lips as he thought about what could possibly be a good alternative.
“I will still talk to Neo, if you wish. If he wants to defend your honor he can do so. And I will talk to John. If there is anything you can think of that you want me to do, I will bow to your whims.”
Call’s stare was nothing short of quizzical, see amused. She was smirking before she knew it, but not a happy smile; a bemused stare, that said something between you can’t be serious and who the fuck do you take me for. She looked away, laughing quietly and leaning back in her seat as she replied.
“If you’re really doing what I want, don’t talk to Neo now,” she mumbled out the window, before snapping her head back to look Jim straight in the eye. “And don’t you ever talk to him while you’re a girl.”
“I will not speak to your Neo. I will make certain that we never cross paths.”
Jim winced a little at the smirk and looked away, choosing instead to stare at the floor. This was penance. He would pay for what he had done and he had the feeling he was risking losing everything. But he had to do this. It was the right thing to do and after what he did, he deserved everything he got.
Your Neo. Did he know many other Neos? And Neo wasn’t- priorities. The corner of her mouth twitched in a slightly wider satisfied smirk, but Call was quick to press a palm to her lips to hide it. Exhaling slowly, she turned to look back at Jim, rolling her shoulders back and glancing him up and down with a quick lick of her lips. Right. What now? What could she do? Whatever him and his husband had was their own business, and he said he’d stay away from Neo. What the fuck now?
Shifting in her seat impatiently, she kicked his shin under the table. Not hard, but just enough to annoy him. Childishly.
“Latté and one of those strawberry lollipops next to the cash register.”
Jim winced slightly at the kick, but didn’t say anything. He deserved more than that. He deserved to be beaten until he was breathing his own blood. Thrown to the side. Left for dead. He had done so much wrong and hurt so many. He deserved to die. The Criminal nodded and got up to go to the counter. His shoulders were hunched and his back slouched, hands tucked into his pockets. He looked like a man who carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.
After been exceedingly nice to the cashier and tipping her handsomely, he brought back their drinks and Call’s lollipop. Jim gave her a broken little smile as he placed her order in front of her and then sat down with his own coffee.
Oh god he looked like a kicked puppy. Well. He had been kicked. But still, he looked plain… pitiful. And yet Call found it a little hard to pity him just yet. Why was he doing this? Being nice, playing nice, letting her just push him around? He couldn’t just be being nice. Call it stubborn, but she refused to believe it. Nodding and muttering a quick thanks as he came back, she sipped on her drink slowly - it was a little too hot for comfort, but yet she persisted - and eyed Jim from over the top of her cup, twirling the lollipop in her free hand.
“What do you want to know?” she asked curiously, setting the cup down in front of her quietly. “What are you getting at?”
“An alternative? I….”
Jim looked lost for a moment and he clasped his hands as if in prayer. He licked his lips as he thought about what could possibly be a good alternative.
